Nick's 1st varsity game memory!

I will never forget the day Nick was brought in to see his 1st varsity baseball action. It was a Saturday & I was not hurried to leave work to go see this game. It was against top ranked 4A Cathedral (& against one of the top college pitching prospects in the country Dillon Peters, TEXAS) & Nick was a FR just brought up from JV as a pitcher. I thought no hurry to leave work he will probably only get to pitch the last inning or so just to get his feet wet, WRONG!

I see him warming up in the bullpen & thought the game started early, again thinking he's only pitching late innings. I looked at the scoreboard & saw that CC was down 5-0 in the 2nd inning, we were getting hammered early. Not only that, upon further scanning of the field for the status of the game, bases were loaded.. a firestorm!! There were two outs tho!!! Nick leaves the bullpen, walks by his mom n me and said, "I'm sick & think I'm gonna puke"!!

Nick struck out the batter leaving the bases loaded!! He proceeded to pitch the next 5 1/3 innings of 2 hit ball, 2 walks, a HBP then did finally give up 1 run in the 7th inning. Peters threw a 1 hitter on us and the final was 6-0 Cathedral.

IU Knocks Off No1 Kentucky!!!

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Junior Christian Watford finished with 20 points in Indiana's first upset of a top-ranked team since taking down Duke in the 2002 NCAA tournament. The only other time they had beaten a No. 1 team in Bloomington was Jan. 7, 2001, when Kirk Hasten hit a buzzer-beater to knock off No. 1 Michigan State 59-58.

Sophomore Victor Oladipo had 13 points and five Hoosiers wound up in double figures. Indiana is 9-0 for the first time since 1989-90.

Kentucky (8-1) was led by Doron Lamb with 19 points and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist with 18.

The Wildcats rallied twice from their largest deficit of the season (10 points) and appeared to have survived the scare when Darius Miller backed in for a dunk to give Kentucky a 69-68 lead with 2 minutes to go.

Watford answered with a layup for the Hoosiers, and then Indianapolis native Marquis Teague drove in for a layup to give Kentucky a 71-70 lead with 48.8 seconds left.

After Watford missed a 15-footer with 28 seconds left, Anthony Davis couldn't seal it, missing the front end of a one-and-one.

Then, after an Indiana turnover, Lamb was fouled with 5.6 seconds to go but missed the first of two shots. After making the second, the Hoosiers rushed up the floor and junior Jordan Hulls dumped the ball to the trailing Watford, who hit from the left wing to end it.

It was the biggest win in Tom Crean's four seasons in Bloomington and ended Kentucky's three-game winning streak in the series.

Kentucky committed 17 turnovers and allowed a season-high point total.

Brutal 2012 baseball schedule! Bring it on!!!

I, for the 1st time just looked at our upcoming varsity baseball schedule, it looks brutal. We play only one 1A school this year, that being Frontier who is typically ranked #1 in the state. As has been in the past, wins are expected & these bigger schools have not intimidated CC whatsoever in the past.

Hard to believe this will be Nicks last varsity season! But, not likely his last baseball season...hopefully. Franklin College is interested, he had a campus visit 1 month ago & he could be playing college ball, a dream he had since age 12.

Fabulous Art Show!!!

I spent a Friday evening with my best friend Jerry at a local church art show on the west side. Many incredible & unique items were on display & for sale. I wanted to share a short list of websites (below) to visit that will provide information on the many items on display & the types of art each artist does. Some of these would be excellent Christmas gifts. What astonished me the most were the low, low prices on these items.

As we browsed these items, music in two separate locations made for an enjoyable evening, well, the food did to. Many, many other forms of art were on display, I was unable to get all the business cards for each one.

Enjoy!!!

CC rolls to another sectional victory!!!

No letdown for No. 1 Central Catholic
Written by
CLYDE HUGHES
For the Journal & Courier
Top-ranked Central Catholic scored six touchdowns on its first seven possessions on the way to a 56-6 victory over North White at LaRocca Field in a Class A, Sectional 34 semifinal Friday night.

The Knights (11-0) host Caston for the sectional championship next Friday. North White finishes its season 4-7.

In extending its winning streak to 41, Central Catholic looked every bit like a two-time defending state champion. The Knights limited North White to two first downs in the first half and 153 yards in total offense, 13 through the air.

Knights coach Kevin O'Shea was worried his team could have come out flat after emotional victories the past two weeks over West Lafayette and No. 2 Pioneer.

"Sometimes your emotional tank can get a little empty," O'Shea said. "I don't think this was our best game but we came out and did what we had to do. Game time, our kids usually show up and play. A lot of these kids have been around the block and they understand it's one and done if you don't show up and play."

Central Catholic erased any doubts early, holding the Vikings to minus-2 yards on their first drive. After a short punt, CC scored on two Danny Anthrop running plays.

Anthrop, who didn't play beyond the first drive of the second quarter, scored three times: on a 13-yard run on the opening drive, on a 15-yard shovel pass near the end of the first quarter and on a 3-yard run on the Knights' first drive of the second quarter.

He finished with 82 yards rushing on four carries and another 34 yards on three receptions.

"The good thing about tonight was a lot of the younger kids got a chance to play," O'Shea said. "Our plan was to give Danny about five or six touches and get him out of there."

Brad Schrader scored on an 8-yard touchdown run between Anthrop's first two touchdowns to give Central Catholic a 21-0 first quarter lead.

"They're an outstanding football team," North White coach Jim Davis said. "I'm not sure anybody will be able to handle them. We're undermanned in a lot of different ways and we were just trying to hold on as long as we could. They just have too many weapons on both sides of the ball."

Jake Churchill scored on a 19-yard shovel pass from Munn and Nick Zak added a 5-yard TD in the second quarter to give the Knights a 42-0 halftime edge.

North White junior fullback Kolton Linback rushed for 119 yards on 29 carries, but most of that came in the second half.

"We've been working on some new stunts and blitzes, and they worked out this week and plugged up all the holes," Central Catholic linebacker Ross Corcoran said. "We came out pretty well prepared. Coach helped with our focus because he's on you all week no matter what the other team's record. He makes us get better every day."

Schrader scored his second touchdown when he returned the second half kickoff 80 yards down the left sideline.

North White got its only score on a 14-play drive that used up 8:50 of the clock between the third and fourth quarter. On a first-and-goal at the Knights 7, Linback gained six yards before fumbling into the end zone but wide receiver Haden Williams fell on the loose ball.

"Linback's a bowling ball," O'Shea said. "He gave us a problem last year. In the first half I thought our defensive line did a good job of pinching him off. For our younger kids, he was a load."

Ty Schrader closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter, converting a screen pass from backup quarterback Hayes Cronk into a 26-yard score.

Central Catholic Football vs West Lafayette

West Side offense sputters after strong start

Written by
SAM KING

West Lafayette senior quarterback Sean Busch sighed, looked to the ground, then came up with the only explanation he could as to why his team was on the losing end against Central Catholic Friday night.

"I don't know what else to say but that I blew it in the fourth quarter," said Busch, whose two interceptions late in the fourth quarter set up CC's tying touchdown and then provided Travis Smith's game-winning pick-six.

The heavily hyped game between unbeaten top-ranked teams in front of an estimated 4,000 fans couldn't have started any better for the Red Devils or any worse for the Knights.

The ending, however, was the complete opposite as CC's defense stopped penetration and ended the game with 15 tackles after a gain of one yard or less.

"We didn't make many adjustments," CC linebacker Matt Burks said. "We started playing harder, playing to the whistle. Only one first down (by WL) in the second half, that shows what a great coaching staff we have."

After opening on a 74-yard scoring drive, the West Lafayette offense never got in the end zone again. A blocked punt was returned for WL's only other points.

"We couldn't get yards on first and second down, leaving us with third and long," Busch said. "You can't build a drive like that, so we just never got a drive going. Turnovers killed us. I had four of them. That's all I need to say."

Amen Galley had a 48-yard run on the opening drive. Maurice Woodard had three straight first-quarter carries that went for a combined 38 yards and three first downs.

From there, the offense sputtered. The Red Devils turned the ball over five times and lost a 14-0 lead in the fourth quarter.

Busch finished 5 of 16 for 33 yards and three interceptions.

"CC's defense is obviously the best we've seen all year ..." senior Ben Thomas said. "With a team as good as CC, you can't be playing CC and playing against yourselves at the same time."

Other than Woodard's 38 yards on three straight carries, the sophomore had just 16 yards on 10 carries. Other than Galley's 48-yard run, he had just 24 rushing yards on 15 carries.

"They are very fast. We could not get outside," WL coach Marshall Overley said. "Every time we tossed it outside, they came up hard. It's not just Anthrop, there's a lot of speed on that team."

Early in the game, it was the Knights who could not move the ball. Because of CC's offensive woes, the Red Devils felt once Thomas scooped up a punt blocked by Tyler Beyer that the 14-0 lead would hold up.

"We definitely thought that was game," Busch said. "I think even some people on their team thought that was it. We gave them room to come back. They are a great fourth-quarter team and we couldn't give them an opportunity in the fourth quarter. I did and they capitalized."

While CC won its 39th game in a row, Friday's loss was just West Lafayette's fourth regular-season loss in the last five seasons.

Turnovers and offensive struggles led to the Red Devils' first loss of 2011, but they hope it will be their only setback.

"I'd rather not lose at all, but it was a great team to lose to," Beyer said. "If there is any team I'd want to lose to, it's CC. They had an all-around really good football team."

CC's unbelievable comeback!

Late rally propels CC past WL in battle of No. 1 teams

Written by
NATHAN BAIRD
When Travis Smith's heroic moment arrived, it felt nothing like what the Central Catholic senior had imagined."I really cannot feel anything in my body right now," Smith said. "It's very intense. I'm so tired. It's been such a long game."Friday's taut, raucous Hoosier Conference championship game between Class A No. 1 Central Catholic and Class 3A No. 1 West Lafayette might have been even longer if not for Smith. The safety's leaping interception and 55-yard return for touchdown in the final 30 seconds lifted Central Catholic to a 21-14 comeback victory in front of an estimated crowd of 4,000 at LaRocca Field.

"I wasn't really sure if he was going to take it back at first," said fellow CC senior Danny Anthrop, whose own fourth-quarter interception set up the game-tying touchdown. "And then I saw him get this speed out of nowhere. I don't know how he did it. That's probably the fastest I've seen that kid run in his life."Central Catholic (9-0, 6-0 Hoosier Conference) trailed 14-0 entering the fourth quarter and 14-7 with less than six minutes to play. It appeared the Knights' 38-game winning streak, the third-longest streak in state history, might come to an end.But Knights senior and Purdue recruit Danny Anthrop's interception set up his second touchdown run, which tied the game with 2:56 to play.

West Lafayette (8-1, 5-1) drove to midfield, but Smith's interception -- the third thrown by Sean Busch and the Red Devils' fifth turnover -- completed the startling comeback."We will definitely use this as motivation as a team and me personally," said Busch, who guided a 74-yard touchdown drive to open the game, capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Brian Bangs."We'll come out harder than we would have for sure. We're just happy we've still got games to play."As in its 17-7 victory over Tipton on Sept. 16, West Side could not sustain its early offensive success. But the Red Devils defense became the first to contain and Anthrop and kept CC off the scoreboard into the third quarter.

In the final two minutes of the third, Tyler Beyer blocked Munn's punt, and Ben Thomas picked it up and ran 24 yards for a touchdown that made it 14-0 West Lafayette."I saw two CC guys fall over and everyone was on the ground with no one near me," Thomas said. "We always practice scooping and scoring. I just scooped it and scored it."Munn, who had completed 67 percent of his passes coming in, connected on 6 of 16 before the punt block. But the Knights' offense began to click as he led a 64-yard touchdown drive, capped by Anthrop's 4-yard run.Anthrop's interception and return to the West Lafayette 10 with five minutes left led to his fourth-and-goal plunge from 1 yard out. With 2:56 to play, the game was tied 14-14."For me the momentum shifted after that first score," CC senior linebacker/receiver Matt Burks said. "After that, things started rolling, things started clicking and we started realizing, hey, we're still in this game.

We can win this."Amen Galley's legs carried West Lafayette from its own 36 to the CC 49. When Busch tried to go to Galley through the air, Smith read the play and pounced."I was just hoping I could get down the field a little bit and make sure the offense could score," said Smith, who also intercepted a pass in the first half. "No way I thought I was going to score."After two incompletions, Busch completed a pass underneath to Galley, which set off a series of laterals. But soon the Red Devils were only going backward until Busch was finally taken down.Anthrop, who came into the game averaging 17.5 yards per offensive touch, carried 16 times for 56 yards and added 42 on three receptions.Despite a stellar defensive game, West Lafayette managed just one first down in the second half. After piling up 159 yards on its first three possessions, the Red Devils totaled 44 yards the rest of the game."We couldn't get yards on first and second down, leaving us with third and long," said Busch, who finished 6 of 17 for 84 yards. "You can't build a drive like that, so we just never got a drive going. Turnovers killed us. I had four of them.

That's all I need to say."Players from both sides agreed the first meeting between the county rivals since 2000 -- and the first meeting between two top-ranked Tippecanoe County teams -- lived up to the hype.In its first season back in the Hoosier Conference since 1994, Central Catholic ran the table."Once they blocked that punt, people were starting to second-guess themselves," Munn said. "Our motto is, 'Next play.' Every game we come out and show them what CC pride is. We never stopped."

Central Catholic football win streak reaching historic levels

By Nathan Baird

With a 55-0 victory over Heritage Christian last Friday, Central Catholic extended its winning streak to 37 games, currently the longest in the state.

According to the Indiana Football Coaches Association website, the Knights also tied Eastern (Howard) for the third-longest winning streak in state history. The Comets, located in Greentown, posted their streak from 1961-65.

If Central Catholic beats Rensselaer on Friday, it will have third place all to itself. Next up is Sheridan, which won 44 straight from 2005-08. The Blackhawks were also the last team to beat CC, narrowly doing so in a Class A sectional semifinal in 2008.

(TRIVIA: What team defeated Sheridan the week before it started its win streak in 2005, then beat the Blackhawks again to end it in 2008? Answer at the bottom of this post.)

Central Catholic would need to win its final two regular-season games — including beating Class 3A No. 1 West Lafayette — then complete its third straight unbeaten state tournament run to reach 45 wins and surpass Sheridan.

Then, if CC can come back and complete an unprecedented fourth straight undefeated state title, it would only TIE the top team on the list. Bloomington won 60 straight, beginning in 1967 and ending in 1973, the first season of the IHSAA state tournament.

The complete list, with local teams in italics:

60—Bloomington (1967-73)

44—Sheridan (2005-08)

37—Central Catholic (2009-11)

37—Eastern (Howard) (1961-65)

34—Warren Central (1983-86)

34—East Chicago Roosevelt (1944-48)

33—Delphi (1964-67)

32—Evansville Reitz (1959-63)

32—Lowell (1934-37)

31—South Bend St. Joseph's (1978-81)

31—Valparaiso (1974-76)

30—Tri-West Hendricks (2003-05)

30—Jimtown (1997-98)

30—Brownsburg (1983-86)

30—Gary Emerson (1920-23)(Trivia answer: West Lafayette defeated Sheridan 28-6 on Oct. 14, 2005 and 37-7 on Oct. 17, 2008. The week before that 2005 victory over Sheridan, the Red Devils beat Seeger to end the state's fifth-longest regular-season winning streak at 49 games.)

Nicks Hot Streak!!!

CC offense relies on big sticks and Stone

By: SAM KING

Another roster makeover didn't deter the Central Catholic baseball program's dreams of a third Class A state championship in a row.

But the Knights knew they had to have a productive leadoff hitter to make a deep tournament run.Nick Stone made an adjustment to his swing and has suddenly become a leadoff hitter who is nearly impossible for pitchers to get out.

In three sectional victories, Stone went 7-for-11, continuing the junior left fielder's late-season hot streak at the plate.Coach Casey Taylor "has done a really good job helping us with our mechanics," Stone said after Monday's sectional championship win over No. 1 Frontier. "The smallest thing can set you off, and he found it and fixed it."Stone said he was guessing at too many pitches, and his arms were in the wrong spot to react quicker to the ball."I can't hit when I guess," he said.No more guessing. A lot more hitting.

Stone's hitting leadoff has helped solidify a Central Catholic team trying to win its fifth state championship and fourth in five seasons."That's your job when you're hitting at the top of the lineup -- get on base," coach Tim Bordenet said. "He's been doing a great job of that."He's also has been a consistent outfielder who plays with reckless abandon. His defense is not overlooked by the CC pitching staff, of which Stone is a part of as well."He is always after everything, always diving," said Austin Munn, who earned a win and a save in Monday's two sectional games. "He is 100 miles an hour all the time."On Saturday, Stone and his CC teammates get a home game against Rockville in a regional semifinal.

Stone is in his first season as a varsity starter. While he has two state championship rings and is undefeated in the postseason, he is ready to be a key component of a team that makes a deep tournament run.His teammates hope are counting on it.His increased productivity also increases theirs. When he gets on base, those behind him in the lineup hope to drive in the speedy Stone."He is on fire right now," Munn said. "He is really helping us being the leadoff and getting on so we have the momentum and go get hits behind him."

National Coach of the Year!!!

Congratulations to Central Catholic Baseball Coach Tim Bordenet who has been chosen by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association as the District 4 Coach of the Year. Bordenet is now in the running for national coach of the year honors, which will be announced Dec. 3 in Nashville, Tennessee.
“It is an honor to be recognized by coaching peers especially on a national level. I am pleased to be able to receive this award as the coach of Central Catholic Junior-Senior High School, but I know that our players, especially our graduating seniors, were responsible for our success and the accolades that follow,” explains Bordenet. Bordenet led the Central Catholic Knights to the Indiana Class A state championship this year - the team's third state title in four years. Bordenet has been the coach at Central Catholic for 13 years (1991-1993 and 2001-present) with a record of 304-104-1. Way to go Coach Bordenet!

Tribstar's view on Regional win CC vs Rockville!!!

LAFAYETTE — If Rockville’s high school baseball players had been able to plan their trip to the Class A Lafayette Central Catholic Regional on Saturday, none of what actually occurred would have been on their lists.

The host Knights, ranked third in the state and sectional winners over top-ranked Frontier, took advantage of some shaky play by the Rox in the first inning, did some long-ball hitting in the second frame and added insult to insult in an 11-run fifth inning for an 18-0 win in the second semifinal game on Saturday.

Scarier than that outcome? The potential of the championship game later Saturday night, when the Knights faced Seton Catholic.

“They’re a great team,” Rockville senior Tyler Bradburn said of the Knights afterward. “They have a great shot at going to state [finals]. They had great hitters, a pretty good pitcher and a good defense behind him.”

Coach Bob Kyle of the Rox — who missed all but the first inning and a half — wasn’t in the mood to be quite as kind to the Knights afterward.

“They’re good,” he admitted. “They hit the ball on the button and we didn’t.”

Having the regional at LCC — where the Knights can display four Class A state championship banners, including the last two and three of the last four — provided the host team with an advantage, Kyle felt.

“It’s a situation where you hope your kids can rise above [the intimidation factor], and we didn’t do that,” Kyle said.

And the Knights’ demonstrative celebrations didn’t sit well with the old-school Rockville coach either, which is why his time in the dugout was shortened.

Visiting team on the scoreboard because of the tournament draw, the Knights got on the board quickly in the top of the first inning.

Leadoff batter Nick Stone — at about 6-foot-3 and maybe 215 pounds the biggest player to bat in the regional so far, although not the biggest of the Knights — singled up the middle and scored when Jake Churchill’s line drive got past a diving Rox outfielder for an RBI double. The Rox lost an infield popup in the high sky and wind, Ryan DeBoy singled for a second run, and two more came in when a line drive was dropped in the outfield.

“Everything fell apart early,” Kyle said later.

“I missed my spots, and [the Knights] took advantage,” added starting pitcher Zac Kempf.

With one out in the second inning, Stone reached on a bad-hop single and Churchill and Austin Munn followed with back-to-back homers.

Kyle visited Kempf on the mound and pointed out loudly that one of the Knights had taunted his pitcher during his home run trot. The next pitch hit DeBoy in the back, Kyle was ejected and both benches were warned about future retaliation.

With LCC’s Brett Haan — about 6-5, with a 90-mile-per-hour fastball — dealing on the mound, that was probably all the runs the host team needed. An infield single by Nate Fisher was all the Rox could muster, although when Derek Gregg was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning the many Rockville fans wondered — loudly — why Haan got to stay in the game.

And in the top of the fifth, the Knights added their extra runs, including three more home run celebrations.

Disappointing as the day turned out to be, though, the three Rockville seniors — two of whom also had their basketball seasons end at the semistate in Lafayette back in March — were emphatic that it didn’t mar their season.

“My senior year has been awesome,” Kempf said. “This was my second regional appearance [of the year]. We had an up and down [baseball] season, but in the end we came through. We knocked out our No. 1 rival, [Class A’s] No. 4 Riverton Parke, in the sectional, and we got where we wanted to be.”

“It’s been awesome,” agreed first baseman Tyler Cooper. “We started off rough [this spring], but in the end we came through. It was fun; we had a great senior year and we’ve got a great team behind us.”

“It’s been amazing,” said Bradburn. “Basketball, baseball … it’s been one of the most memorable years of my life, and I’m grateful for every moment.”

Seton Catholic, a school with fewer than 75 students, got the benefit of eight errors by Wes-Del to win Saturday’s regional opener 11-1 and took a 14-12 record into the championship contest.

Central Catholic trio blanks Rossville

Another Big Day for Nick & his Central Catholic Knights!!!

Three Central Catholic pitchers combined on a three-hitter Tuesday, and Nick Stone went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Class A No. 1 Knights to a 9-0 baseball victory over Rossville.

Winning pitcher Austin Munn struck out five and allowed two hits over four innings. Brett Haan allowed one hit in the fifth, and Trae Bobillo pitched shutout ball for the final two innings.

Jake Churchill also had two hits and Haan drove in two runs for CC.

Actually, the newspaper report is a bit incorrect. Nick was 2-2 at the plate, his 3rd at bat he reached on an error & it was scored as such. His 2 RBI's came off a triple on his 1st at bat that went deep into the right field corner & into foul territory by the time it hit and rolled.

Nick will start on the mound Friday against Delphi at Central Catholic. Delphi was runner up in the state finals last year at Victory Field in Indy.

Big Day for CC & Nick!@

Nick comes up big for Central Catholic on Saturday in a doubleheader against conference foe Carroll. A something like 72 game conference winning streak was on the line & in jeopardy in both games Saturday. The 1st game final was 1-0 in favor of CC & Nick. While getting in trouble several times he & his team bailed each other out on several occasions, especially a diving catch by Brett Haan on a deep fly to RC. Two great line drive catches by 1st baseman Ryan Deboy saved other possible damages. Nick left runners stranded at 2nd & 3rd by k'ing the last batter in the 7th.

The 2nd game saw an offensive onslaught by both teams that went back in forth. In desperation & in the 5th, Nick was brought in in the 5th, our 4th pitcher this game & with the game tied 10-10. He gave up a run (not his scored tho) & are now down 11-10 end of 5. We tie it in the 6th & in the 7th Nick puts us up 13-11 on a line drive down the 1st baseline, scoring 2 runs, he makes it to 2nd.

With 130+ pitches in the book thus far for the day & in the bottom of the 7th he allows a run and a runner & has 1 out. Austin Munn comes in and earns an "atta boy" from Nick, saving a 2nd win of the day.

Carroll 0-12

Nick Stone pitched a four-hitter in the opener and then came back to earn the Game 2 victory in relief for the Class A No. 2 Knights.

Stone struck out 10 in Game 1 and CC got the only run it needed on Devin Morgan's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

Brett Haan went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Jake Churchill homered and drove in three runs in a Game 2 that saw the teams combine for 23 hits and 11 errors.

Austin Munn, CC's fifth pitcher, got the final two outs to earn the save after Stone allowed a run and struck out two in two innings of relief.

CC pitchers pitch no hitter

Central Catholic, Crawfordsville pitch no-hitters

By JCOnline

Tuesday was no-hitter day for three Lafayette area pitchers.

Central Catholic's Austin Munn and Andrew Hubertz combined on a no-hitter in the Knights' 10-1 victory over Tri-Central.

Cory Rice was nearly untouchable, striking out 14 in Crawfordsville's 9-0, five-inning home victory over Tri-West.

Munn (1-0) had seven strikeouts for the Class A No. 5 Knights (3-1), who broke out of an early season slump with nine hits. Hubertz struck out the side in the seventh.

Jake Churchill was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Brett Haan was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run double in the fourth.

In the Crawfordsville victory, Rice (1-2) struck out the side in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. He induced a groundout by Matt Pope in the third inning after hitting Mitch Alexander with a pitch. Rice also walked a batter.

Chris Minks hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning for Crawfordsville (3-3, 1-0 Sagamore Conference).

CC vs Twin Lakes

CC squeezes out victory

The Knights are 2-1 despite scoring three runs this season. CC scored without a hit in the second inning off Twin Lakes pitcher Jordan Crabb.

Nick Stone reached on an error and went to third when Crabb's pickoff throw was wild. One out later, Trae Bobillo laid down a suicide squeeze bunt that scored Stone.

Haan (2-1) struck out nine.

Hammered by Harrison

We lost to local foe Harrison tonight 8-1. CC must find some bats somewhere as we've scored only 2 runs between the 2 games, winning one of those tho. Ironically we scored our 1 run tonight in the 1st inning just as we did with Burlington, WI. That run was scored on an error.

Nick has not thrown in practice for 2 weeks but came in tonight for 3 2/3 innings I think. He gave up 4 runs, not all of those were earned runs tho. I think we had 3 errors in those innings. He threw a runner out while in left field on a drive into the gap, got the runner trying to stretch it to a double.

Lots of work to do for a 3peat!

Harrison's Richards two-hits CC

By Staff Reports
Vonn Richards threw a two-hitter and Harrison’s bats gave him plenty of support in a season-opening 8-1 victory over Central Catholic at Leming Field on Tuesday.

Richards walked one and struck out five, allowing only a double and a single to CC leadoff hitter Jake Churchill. He retired 11 straight batters from the third through the sixth innings and didn’t allow a hit after the third.

Harrison catcher Daniel Fleming went 3-for-4 with a double, scoring two runs and driving in two. Michael Carnahan went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and scored twice.

A 2nd story on our win

CC outduels Wisconsin baseball champions

By Nathan Baird:

Even in a matchup of defending state champions, pitchers are ahead of hitters at this stage of the baseball season.

Class A No. 1 Central Catholic and Burlington (Wis.) Catholic Central pitchers combined to strike out 21 batters on Saturday at Leming Field.

The Knights scratched across an unearned run in the first inning, and Austin Munn, Andrew Hubertz and Brett Haan made it hold up for a 1-0 victory.

"We haven't gotten too many live at-bats, so we kind of knew we were going to be slow, but I don't think we knew we were going to be this slow," said Haan, who also batted sixth and played right field. "But luckily we pushed that one across early and that's all we needed."

CC only played half of its scrimmage at Brebeuf on March 23 before getting rained out. The Knights faced full-speed live pitching only one other time this spring.

Burlington Catholic Central pitchers Rex Morrow and Tyler Floyd combined on a four-hitter and struck out eight. A total of 15 batters struck out looking.

"It was a good game," Hilltoppers coach Tom O'Connell said. "Both teams have a lot to work on. I'm not disappointed. Our pitchers did very well."

CC's Jake Churchill reached on an infield single leading off the bottom of the first. He took second on a wild pitch and scored when second baseman Brandon Hoffman misplayed Cody Schrader's grounder.

Munn allowed two hits and struck out seven in 32/3 innings. But he also walked six, hit a batter and threw three wild pitches. The Hilltoppers failed to take advantage, stranding eight runners in the first four innings.

Hubertz needed one pitch to get out of a two-on, two-out jam in the fourth. Haan (1-0) struck out six over three innings of hitless relief.

"Brett did a great job coming in and slamming the door and not allowing them anything," Bordenet said. "Give Hubertz credit; he came in with the game on the line, one pitch-one out, and got us out of the jam."

Burlington Central Catholic, located about an hour north of Chicago, has an enrollment of about 140. O'Connell saw in a newsletter last summer that CC, like his team, had won four state titles in the past seven seasons. He emailed Bordenet, and the two met at a coaches clinic in Nashville last December.

Several Burlington Central Catholic players stayed behind to participate in the school musical, which O'Connell said raises tens of thousands of dollars.

"It's pretty cool that they're the exact mirror image of us and they come down here and wanted to play us," Haan said. "It was just a good duel."

Central Catholic Betters Catholic Central

CC baseball defeats Wisconsin champs to open season

By Nathan Baird:
Three Central Catholic pitchers combined on a 13-strikeout shutout, and the Class A No. 1 Knights defeated Burlington (Wisc.) Catholic Central 1-0 at Leming Field on Saturday.

It was the season opener for both teams, both of whom have won four state titles in the past seven seasons. Central Catholic is the two-time defending Class A state champion.

Austin Munn started for the Knights and allowed just two singles over 3 2/3 innings, but also walked six, hit a batter and threw three wild pitches. Andrew Hubertz needed only one pitch to escape a two-on, two-out jam in the seventh. Brett Haan came on to strike out six over three hitless innings.

CC scored its only run in the first when Jake Churchill reached on an infield single, took second base on a wild pitch and came home on a Hilltopper error. Rex Morrow and Tyler Floyd combined on a three-hitter for Burlington Catholic Central.

State Champ vs State Champ

Central Catholic baseball to play Wisconsin state power

One of the congratulatory e-mails that Central Catholic baseball coach Tim Bordenet received last summer came from Tom O’Connell, the baseball coach at Burlington (Wisc.) Catholic Central.

Bordenet said O’Connell was intrigued that CC had won its fourth title in seven years because Burlington Catholic Central had done the same in Wisconsin.

O’Connell offered to make a trip down if the Knights could find an opening on their schedule. So the teams will play Saturday at 1 p.m. at Leming Field for CC’s season opener.

“We can kind of compare Indiana baseball to another state, and to a team that’s had a lot of success,” Bordenet said. “It’s a good opportunity. Our kids are looking forward to playing anybody but especially someone that high of a caliber right off the bat.”

Burlington Catholic Central has an enrollment of 149 and is located about an hour north of Chicago. O’Connell was named 2010 national coach of the year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

It's Central Catholic, Frontier & Cowan Again!!!

Media coverage of the top 3 teams in the state, ClassA, same ol, same ol.

By Nathan Baird:

In an annual tradition of sorts, Central Catholic and Frontier open the season atop the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association's Class A poll.

Central Catholic received four of six first-place votes and totaled 58 points. Frontier received no first-place votes but totaled 40 points.

Last season Frontier opened at No. 1, with CC ranked third behind Cowan. The Knights are two-time defending state champions and have won three of the last four.

CC plays host to Frontier at Leming Field on April 18.

Delphi, last year’s Class 2A runner-up, received two first-place votes and opens the season ranked third. Forest Park and Wapahani own top two spots, respectively, and defending state champion Heritage Christian is fourth.

Fountain Central, coming off a 24-4 season, also received votes in the 2A poll.

Crawfordsville opens the season ranked No. 5 in Class 3A. The Athenians have won five straight sectional championships. Jasper received three of five first-place votes, but is behind No. 1 New Haven and No. 2 New Palestine in the poll.

McCutcheon received votes in the Class 4A poll. No. 1 Cathedral received three of six first-place votes.

Another War???

The US is headed for yet another war. Again under the pretense that Libyan leader Ghaddafi is killing his citizens. In order to halt this atrocious act on humans, the US wants to attack & invade so they can then be the ones killing innocent civilians & children. Also more American military lives are to be lost or changed from warfare.

The US: A Paranoid Nation!

Gawd, I'm sitting here listening to idiot acting Anderson Cooper arguing with a Japanese official over what country is being more honest about the nuclear crisis in Japan, geeesh!!! Typically, I am an Anderson Cooper fan but gawd, why does our media, our people, our government have to argue about everything on the face of this earth as to what, how & when other countries handle their own situations?? Gee, the Japanese are one of only a few powerful allies we have left & we now want to start trouble with them. Hey US, give it a rest!!!

Given the track record of the US covering up everything & deceiving its own people, I have no problem accepting what the Japanese government is reporting, they are under a catastrophic situation that humans have never experienced. The US has a horrible, horrible track record of being dishonest with us & other countries around the world. This blog is not big enough to even list all of those incidents. The Katrina affair was bungled horribly, including all the cover ups afterward. The failure to use known intelligence reports on the 9-11 terrorists attacks before hand is the biggest coverup in US history. Well, except for the "The Gulf of Tonkin" incident which incited the VietNam War. This incident manufactured information in order to incite a war with North Vietnam. This included falsifying or manufacturing documents of an attack on US battleships in the Tonkin Gulf that never even happened. Departments involved were the Presidency, military & everyone in between.

Gulf of Tonkin Incident!!!

How has the US become such a paranoid nation?

Now we're arguing over the evacuation zone? When will the US give it up???

Evacuation Zone Argument!!!

CC baseball closer yet!

We are getting really, really close to the high school baseball season now, the boys polls have come out. In a bit of a surprise, I find our Central Catholic Knights ranked #1. Frontier, our nemesis is ranked 2nd. Another fine & outstanding program we have faced the past 2 years in regional finals is Cowan ranked #3. But, Cowan is without their outstanding 96mph fastball pitching ace Justin O'Conner, he was drafted last year 1st round.

Go KNIGHTS!!!

Another step closer to Communism

Hey, our city has taken one big step towards a communistic approach to society. Don't get me wrong, I firmly believe we have one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the state including our county agency. I've noticed that over the past many years our government is breaking Constitutional law with numerous behaviors. The 1st was sobriety & seat belt check points & now this.

What our city law enforcement agency will be doing is to check our cars to see if they are locked or unlocked. Ok, they claim they will have minor access and at the same time will "kinda" eye out items in the car that could possibly be stolen. (I'm pretty sure most of us know already) They will then issue a safety protection card left on the windshield. It does not take a rocket scientist to know that their version of "kinda" eyeing stuff out is really meant to say "snooping" things out. I can't wait to see the challenge of the legality of this if drugs are found & the search & seizure law comes into the case. I will file a lawsuit if an officer opens my door only to lock it. My key is bent & will not unlock my car, it works fine on my ignition so I leave it unlocked, nothing left in it to steal. Personally, what the fuck business is it to city law enforcement if my car is unlocked or anyone elses? Sorry, I disagree with this one!!!

The 4th Amendment:
'The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.'

I firmly believe the checkpoints are in violation of the 4th amendment. It clearly states that one has to provide "probable cause" to be stopped & searched. What did I do leading up to the checkpoint that warranted a stoppage? A search?

Recent violations have come about while the government now has the authority to secretly go onto one's property w/o a warrant to place a GPS tracking device on your car & track you without your kn owledge.
GPS without a warrant!!!

A Tragedy in our town

Today we have received great news about the arrest of the driver in the hit & run fatality of a 15 year old girl walking along a road here with her friend. There's no way possible that I would understand how the parents, friends & family feel after such a tragic incident.

I think it's also appropriate to comment on one of our local law enforcement agencies for resolving this issue quickly. I think it would be difficult to solve a hit n run accident, especially if that vehicle were from another state. Congrats go out to the local law enforcement agencies involved.

The driver suspect of the hit and run death of a 15-year-old girl Sunday night has been arrested. Police arrested 42-year-old Robert Kirts Monday.

By News Staff Fox59

The driver suspect of the hit and run death of a 15-year-old girl Sunday night has been arrested. Police arrested 42-year-old Robert Kirts Monday.

According to police, Ebony Knight was walking along State Road 25 near South Beck Lane around 8:30 p.m. on the south side of Lafayette when a dark-colored SUV hit her. The vehicle then sped off.

A police officer was looking along County Road 275 South for the suspected vehicle Monday when he saw Kirts' black Jeep Liberty. The vehicle had front end damage.

Kirts came outside to see what the officer was checking. He was then arrested.

Kirts is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident. His car is currently impounded.

Central Catholic baseball on the horizon

We are etching ever so close to another Central Catholic baseball season here in Lafayette, IN. Practice is underway inside right now due to imperfect field conditions outside. My son Nick has been throwing during the offseason & doing some hitting with me every other weekend & at school. At my age, I can still barely throw batting practice to him. Two more summers & I will have an excuse not to throw to him anymore, he will have graduated. Not that I don't like it because I do enjoy every minute of it, what father wouldn't? In fact, when he moves on to his college playing days, I will still do it, I just might need a wheel chair to get to the mound & back. LOL

Nick's team is on back to back State Championship runs but I feel this year is going to be a tremendous challenge. CC has lost a ton of talent that took us to 2 straight titles. I have a ton of confidence in our coaching staff to get us prepared once again though. The 1st scrimmage is March 24th against Brebuef. We then play a 4A State Champion team out of Wisconsin called Catholic Central, the same team name only turned around. LOL Catholic Central has won 2 of the past 3 state titles in WI in Div4. We are on back to back & 3 out of the past 4. This could be war!!!

This game is Saturday April 2, at Lafayette Central Catholic 1:00pm!!! Be There!!!

Lindsay Lohan-No Jail Time?

I made a comment in one of the forums of a major news site a few days ago. There were things being said by the judge that led me to believe that no jail time would be handed down. The judge was quoted as warning Lohan not to push her luck. Umm, interesting statement & an insight to his perception of the situation up to this point. This is like the 2nd or 3rd time she has violated probation & she gets sent back to rehab not jail? This is almost never heard of. These 2 scenarios led me to believe she is getting favoritism here, yet again.

My feelings are that she's well past the pushing her luck stage. Below is a copied and pasted paragraph that further supports my thoughts. This will be the very 1st time I've ever heard that a defendant might not serve prison time if convicted of theft while on probation because they are not a threat to society. Never, ever have I heard that. A prison is not a place for hardened criminals? Cmon, it's always been a place for criminals period. And now it seems there's a different definition & perception as to what a prison is for? For Lindsay Lohan??

The quote:
"Adds L.A. criminal defense attorney Harland Braun: "Even if she's convicted, I doubt she'll get state prison time because she's not a physical threat to the public. Prison is generally regarded as a place for hardened criminals, not someone who clearly has mental issues. She has a defensible case."

In essence, are they saying as long as a defendant is no threat to society, they could get away with criminal acts? Could Lohan rack up numerous counts of theft & never ever get prison time? Only cause she's not deemed a threat to society? And what about prisoners already in the system for simple theft?

Evidently she has past theft allegations which could be used against her in court. Hopefully so, because I firmly believe she should be in a prison just like any other typical criminal that's committed theft & violated probation 3x. Since she's had past theft allegations, a prison is also a place for deterrence. A place to keep the offender out of society so they cannot continue to commit crimes.

And don't most all criminals have mental issues? Yet still sent to prison to be held accountable for their actions? It's about accountability.

George Hincapie, a great American cyclist!

This will bring sad, sad news to the peloton & to fans worldwide when American cyclist George Hincapie retires. Hincapie, one of America's greatest & most popular cyclists was along for the ride on all 7 of Lance Armstrong's TdFrance titles. No, I take that back, Hincapie helped lead Armstrong to those 7 titles!! Domestiques do not get the credit they deserve, they do all the work for team leaders in a long tedious job with absolutely no publicity. George is/was one of the greatest workhorses in the cycling world over the past 15 years. Starting & finishing the Tour de France this many times is an incredible feat, especially being a domestique.

If there was ever a wish list for you George it would be to get that Paris-Robaix (Hell of the North) win. One that you have came oh so close to winning, the one I know you want. Good luck this season!!!

Thanks George for all the memories, you are a hero!!!

George Hincapie retiring!!!

Will somewbody go get my gun???

Disclaimer: Meant as sarcasm out of frustration with 2 cell phone services!!! My current service & hopefully my past service!!!

I sometimes have sympathy with these insane people that go shoot up a business out of some sort of frustrations with service!!! Well not really but I have 2 businesses really, really frustrating me!!! Frustrating me, especially when ya can't get a live person on the phone no matter what number you press!!!

Ok, now that the disclaimer is out of the way, I want to describe a horrendous experience that is going on with my 2 cell phone services, a former service and the other hopefully, my new service. Here is the lowdown!

I bought a new cell phone & service (I'll refer to as new service to save face) & took a temporary number while placing a request with my new service to request a transfer of my old number. (which is w/o a doubt acceptable) Ok, it would take 24-48 hours. After the 48 hours came n went, I called my new service again. They took information again & placed another request to the old service, it would take another 24-48 hours. This too came n went. Ok, now, I'm making numerous calls to both services desperately trying to get my old number transferred.

In numerous conversations with my old service, they kept asking for information & that they would go ahead and put this thru & everything was ok. NOT!! Another 24-48 hours passed. Upon speaking to my new service tech again...umm, maybe about the 5th-6th time, they tell me my old service continues to block the request claiming the information I'm giving my new service (to present to my old service on the request) is not matching my old service information. But, in the previous 3-4 conversations they (my old service) agreed that all the information was correct.

Currently, I'm at 13 phone calls to care service, seven of which went to my new service, six going to my old service. Of those 13 calls, 11 of those have went to India. (Not Indiana, yes India) the other 2 I think went to Australia as there was a strong Australian accent. The India calls I'm sure of because I asked. I have logged 3 hrs 23 mins of time on the phone with tech service, some of this was being placed on hold!!

Had I known this would be that hard, I would have taken those 3 hrs 23 mins and just called/texted/e-mailed all of my contacts to let them know my phone number had changed!!! I am currently on another 24-48 hour wait. GRRRR!!!!!

And I guess I'm thankful for technology today (LOL), I was able to sit here and play online games n read while being on hold all those hours.
