A Tragedy in our town

Today we have received great news about the arrest of the driver in the hit & run fatality of a 15 year old girl walking along a road here with her friend. There's no way possible that I would understand how the parents, friends & family feel after such a tragic incident.

I think it's also appropriate to comment on one of our local law enforcement agencies for resolving this issue quickly. I think it would be difficult to solve a hit n run accident, especially if that vehicle were from another state. Congrats go out to the local law enforcement agencies involved.

The driver suspect of the hit and run death of a 15-year-old girl Sunday night has been arrested. Police arrested 42-year-old Robert Kirts Monday.

According to police, Ebony Knight was walking along State Road 25 near South Beck Lane around 8:30 p.m. on the south side of Lafayette when a dark-colored SUV hit her. The vehicle then sped off.

A police officer was looking along County Road 275 South for the suspected vehicle Monday when he saw Kirts' black Jeep Liberty. The vehicle had front end damage.

Kirts came outside to see what the officer was checking. He was then arrested.

Kirts is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident. His car is currently impounded.

Central Catholic baseball on the horizon

We are etching ever so close to another Central Catholic baseball season here in Lafayette, IN. Practice is underway inside right now due to imperfect field conditions outside. My son Nick has been throwing during the offseason & doing some hitting with me every other weekend & at school. At my age, I can still barely throw batting practice to him. Two more summers & I will have an excuse not to throw to him anymore, he will have graduated. Not that I don't like it because I do enjoy every minute of it, what father wouldn't? In fact, when he moves on to his college playing days, I will still do it, I just might need a wheel chair to get to the mound & back. LOL

Nick's team is on back to back State Championship runs but I feel this year is going to be a tremendous challenge. CC has lost a ton of talent that took us to 2 straight titles. I have a ton of confidence in our coaching staff to get us prepared once again though. The 1st scrimmage is March 24th against Brebuef. We then play a 4A State Champion team out of Wisconsin called Catholic Central, the same team name only turned around. LOL Catholic Central has won 2 of the past 3 state titles in WI in Div4. We are on back to back & 3 out of the past 4. This could be war!!!

This game is Saturday April 2, at Lafayette Central Catholic 1:00pm!!! Be There!!!

Lindsay Lohan-No Jail Time?

I made a comment in one of the forums of a major news site a few days ago. There were things being said by the judge that led me to believe that no jail time would be handed down. The judge was quoted as warning Lohan not to push her luck. Umm, interesting statement & an insight to his perception of the situation up to this point. This is like the 2nd or 3rd time she has violated probation & she gets sent back to rehab not jail? This is almost never heard of. These 2 scenarios led me to believe she is getting favoritism here, yet again.

My feelings are that she's well past the pushing her luck stage. Below is a copied and pasted paragraph that further supports my thoughts. This will be the very 1st time I've ever heard that a defendant might not serve prison time if convicted of theft while on probation because they are not a threat to society. Never, ever have I heard that. A prison is not a place for hardened criminals? Cmon, it's always been a place for criminals period. And now it seems there's a different definition & perception as to what a prison is for? For Lindsay Lohan??

The quote:
"Adds L.A. criminal defense attorney Harland Braun: "Even if she's convicted, I doubt she'll get state prison time because she's not a physical threat to the public. Prison is generally regarded as a place for hardened criminals, not someone who clearly has mental issues. She has a defensible case."

In essence, are they saying as long as a defendant is no threat to society, they could get away with criminal acts? Could Lohan rack up numerous counts of theft & never ever get prison time? Only cause she's not deemed a threat to society? And what about prisoners already in the system for simple theft?

Evidently she has past theft allegations which could be used against her in court. Hopefully so, because I firmly believe she should be in a prison just like any other typical criminal that's committed theft & violated probation 3x. Since she's had past theft allegations, a prison is also a place for deterrence. A place to keep the offender out of society so they cannot continue to commit crimes.

And don't most all criminals have mental issues? Yet still sent to prison to be held accountable for their actions? It's about accountability.

George Hincapie, a great American cyclist!

This will bring sad, sad news to the peloton & to fans worldwide when American cyclist George Hincapie retires. Hincapie, one of America's greatest & most popular cyclists was along for the ride on all 7 of Lance Armstrong's TdFrance titles. No, I take that back, Hincapie helped lead Armstrong to those 7 titles!! Domestiques do not get the credit they deserve, they do all the work for team leaders in a long tedious job with absolutely no publicity. George is/was one of the greatest workhorses in the cycling world over the past 15 years. Starting & finishing the Tour de France this many times is an incredible feat, especially being a domestique.

If there was ever a wish list for you George it would be to get that Paris-Robaix (Hell of the North) win. One that you have came oh so close to winning, the one I know you want. Good luck this season!!!

Thanks George for all the memories, you are a hero!!!
